My mother-in-law was admitted to the hospital on Saturday and released today. While she was in the hospital, my brother-in-law stayed here with us. You would think that I'd be humbly-honored to be of service at this difficult time for her. Come now, if I was, would I be blogging about this right now? NO!
I am so rotten! My nose has been pointed towards the sky with an, "I knew it" bounce. All these years that she has been nasty to me and treated me as if I was just some "chick" that her favorite son was seeing up until we had our first child, then I became Anton's "baby mama," once again it has come back to haunt her. She needs me. She is helplessly attached to a hospital bed and at the mercy of the staff. But I know that doesn't bother her, what I hope is eating away at her is the fact that she is now at my mercy because I have to care for her son. HA, SHE NEEDS ME NOW! I got one over on her now!
Oh yeah, her baby boy may very be staying at her son's home right now, but don't get it twisted, it's me who he is staying with. I'm the one home all day, not her son. ME, yeah me, the one who, "took her son away from her," and who will never be good enough for him, (in her opinion), is needed. I bet I'm good enough now!
I know these are evil thoughts stored up in my heart. I am here to confess to you, my Sisters, my friends. I do not want this to be the overflow of my heart, (Luke 6:43-45). My heart must not speak these things. Pray for me, continually, (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Pray for the overflow of my heart y'all. Counsel me, encourage me, rebuke me please!

Ruth, chapter 4.
Ruth’s book closes for our reading pleasure with Boaz locating the “rightful” kinsman-redeemer. Boaz is afforded the opportunity of claiming land and Ruth as his wife because the kinsman-redeemer was not able to do so. They married and had a son.
At his birth, women said to Naomi, “Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For you daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.” Ruth 4:14-15 NIV
Naomi then puts the child on her lap and cares for him. Again, the women present spoke, “Naomi has a son.” They named him Obed, (Ruth 4:17 NIV) which means, “serving.”
Okay, there were some women around when Ruth gave birth to Obed and they told Naomi that her daughter-in-law, who loves her…, how did they know that Ruth loved her mother-in-law?
Had Ruth told them that she loved Naomi?
*NO.
Did Naomi mention that Ruth loved her?
*NO.
It was because of what Ruth did. Ruth "spoke" of loving her mother-in-law with her actions. Love is a verb.
Application: Let my actions "speak" of loving my mother-in-law.
Today's gift is a 'Friendship Teapot.
It comes with a card that explains what each part of the teapot represents in a friendship. I purchased this in Japan about three years ago. I had no clue who I wanted to give it to so I just hung on to it. But now I do...

...of Ruth IV
Ruth, chapter 3
What I've learned from this chapter is that Naomi is concerned about Ruth's provisions, so Naomi advises her daughter-in-law to uncover the feet of Boaz and lie down. Ruth responds, "I will do whatever you say." v. 5 NIV. Ruth obediently does what she was instructed to do by her mother-in-law, and when Boaz is startled awake, he notices a woman at his feet. Ruth then asks Boaz, as her kinsman-redeemer, to "spread the corner of his garment over her." v.9 NIV
A woman uncovering the feet of a man and lying down was a modest and subjective approach to the next step of asking the man to cover her with his garment. Humbly, the woman would then request that he, "spread thy skirt over her." The Hebrew for "spread they skirt" is "spread thy wing," and wing is symbolic of protection as seen by the young birds being covered under the mother-bird's wing as protection from prey. Boaz obliges, signifying that he will take her as wife, under his protection.
As mentioned last week, I deliberately ignore the advice of my mother-in-law. I am understanding that I have been doing this out of ignorance. Naomi's advice to Ruth was intended as a blessing, without malicious intent. I have ignorantly taken the offering of my mother-in-law's advice as her way of controlling us.
Also, in my not Christ-like thinking, I assume that my mother-in-law's intention is self-seeking. If we prosper, she benefits as well. Yeah, I'm soooo good at knowing the heart's of others...
Application: Repent, change the way I think about my mother-in-law and honor her.
*Note- My mother-in-law has been in her own apartment for a week now, however, I will not discontinue this study. I know that I do not need to work on obtaining a relationship with her just because we were living together. She is a part of my life and I must, no, will honor her and love her as Christ loves me. Thank you all for listening to me, offering advice and best of all, PRAYING!!! I love you.

...of Ruth III
Ruth 2:13-23 NIV
Ruth has found favor in the eyes of Boaz, and she humbly thanks him by referring to herself as his servants but acknowledges that she does not have the same credibility of his servant girls. Boaz expresses more favor for Ruth by inviting her to dinner.
Ruth's portion was plentiful, so plentiful that she ate until she was satisfied and had some left-over. When Ruth went back to gleaning, Boaz instructed his men not to embarrass Ruth if she gathered from the sheaves. He told them to leave some stalks from the bundles for her to pick up instead.
When Ruth was done gleaning, she returned home to her mother-in-law, showing her what she'd gathered and then gave Naomi what was left from her dinner. Naomi then inquired about Ruth's location of gleaning. When she heard that it was Boaz, Naomi rejoiced because he was one of their kinsman-redeemers.
Kinsman-redeemer is the next eldest single brother or relative of the deceased husband who is to marry the widow.
Naomi then gave Ruth advice to continue to glean in Boaz's field. Ruth obeyed the advice and continued to live with her mother-in-law.
WOW! Ruth was awesome. Taking this book a few verses at a time is really convicting. Ruth's positive attitude toward her mother-in-law was beautiful in God's eyes. So He had Boaz invite her to dinner where she had "more than enough" to eat; Ruth did not "glean to the edges," therefore she had some to give her mother-in-law!
There was a time I was very upset with Anton sending his mother money. So on the next payday, I totally disregarded our budget and foolishly wasted our money. I validated my actions by saying that she was going to get it and do what she pleased so I will just spend it all before she gets to it. Ugh, so nasty and unChrist-like, I know.
God further rewarded Ruth when Boaz told his harvesters to leave some stalks from their bundles for her. Ruth continues to put me to shame when she obeys the advice given by Naomi to finish gleaning in Boaz's field! I have blatantly done the opposite of anything my mother-in-law advised, even if I had to go out of my way. Sad ain't it?
Finally, my big Sister Ruth makes me wonder if I really want to "be like her" because the chapter closes by saying, "...And she lived with her mother-in-law." Ruth 2:23 NIV Yeah but, did they get along? :)
Application #1: I will not glean to the edges of my field again so that I may share with my mother-in-law. No, better yet, so that I can GIVE to my mother-in-law. I choose to do this because I want to please God. Ephesians 4:28 1 Timothy 6:18 Hebrews 13:16 Galatians 6:7-10 Leviticus 23:22
Application #2: I will live in peace with my mother-in-law. Proverbs 14:30 James 3:18 Hebrews 12:14 Romans 12:18
Application #3: I will, with guidance from the Lord, seek and practice advice from my mother-in-law. 1 Kings 22:5 Proverbs 2:6 2 Chronicles 26:5

...of Ruth II
Ruth 2:1-12 NIV
Back in Bethlehem, Ruth asks Naomi’s permission to glean fields. When Boaz, (the owner of the field), notices Ruth, he inquires of her and then request that she not glean in any other field. Boaz expresses a special interest in Ruth. Ruth said to Boaz, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me-a foreigner?” v.10 Ruth had found favor in Boaz’s because he had “heard” about her and Naomi. Boaz hoped for the blessings of the Lord to be on Ruth because of this.
Quite often, when the word “heard” is used in the context of reporting, it has a negative connotation. However, what Boaz had “heard” about Ruth was positive. Reflecting on my attitude towards my mother-in-law, what would others “hear” about us? Comparing Ruth and I for the sake of my heart being changed so that I too may find protective providence under the wings of the Lord. V.12
It had been “heard” that Ruth left her father, mother, and homeland to dwell in a place with people who were not her own with her mother-in-law after her husband’s death.v.11 People would “hear” that Larie, (yeah, that’s me J), chose to go back to her homeland with her father, mother and own people. She doesn’t even communicate with her.
By choosing to stay with Naomi, Ruth had taken refuge under the wings of God. Ruth, as a Moabite, did not worship God, but she chooses to leave behind what she is accustomed to. This is her act of faith. I already claim this protection, but sadly, my faith is not like Ruth’s!
Application: When people “hear” about us, it will be because of the good that I speak of and do for my mother-in-law.

...of Ruth
My mother-in-law and I do not have a relationship, right now. During the time that Anton and I were dating, she was "cool." The day I told her that Anton asked me to marry him made the change.
Maybe about two years into our marriage, I asked Anton why his mother did not like me. "I don't know," he responded. I wanted to know why so that I could work on making things right for us, (Anton included). It took him a "minute" to ask her, but when he did, WOW, I felt worse.
Mom-in-law stated that she felt as if I was taking her son away from her and that she doesn't think that any woman will ever be good enough for her son. So with my sassy attitude, I acted as if I didn't care and had nothing else to do with her.
Upon the understanding of husband and wife being one flesh, Genesis 2:24, I repented of how I felt about Anton's mother and decided that I needed to try again. I wrote a letter asking her if I may call her "mom." Her simple reply was, "I never wanted any daughters." Why can't I have a relationship with my mother-in-law that my mommy has with hers and my daddy with his, I thought?
Ruth's account is inspiring. When I first read it, I thought that chick was crazy! How is she going to tell her mother-in-law that she is going to follow her, die where she dies and worship her God, Ruth 1:16-17? Ruth even said that she would be buried where Naomi would be buried, WHOA! What's inside the heart of Ruth that prompts her to have such a devoted heart to her dead husband's mother?
Here's a woman, who does not know God, (Ruth was a Moabite. Moabites refused passage to Israel, hired Balaam to curse Israel and worshipped Chemosh), expressing love and devotion to her mother-in-law. And I, Larie, professing Christianity, wanted nothing prosperous for my mother-in-law. I just wanted her to leave us alone.
I think that I placed expectations on my mother-in-law that she is not able to carry out. I was looking for her to "meet me halfway, " when I should have gone ALL the way, and continued to go further if needed. Our relationship will be our own, without the influence of what I "think" it should be based on the relationships I am accustomed to.
I'm not done with this post, I think it's gonna be a mini-series. I want to take it slow.

... of defining adultery
The phone rings. Nervously, “I’ll get it,” my husband says.
Hmmm…
I catch him glancing at me while he speaks indistinctively.
Is it adultery?
To whom is he speaking with, and why is he now leaving the room?
Could it be, adultery?
“I’ll be back,” he says. “Can I ‘wide wit’ you daddy?” “Not this time man.”
Is he committing adultery?
Our checking account is -$42! How? Did I mismanage our finances again?
Not adultery…is it?
Oh, I see, the Automatic Teller Machine dispensed $200. WAIT, for what?
It can’t be for adultery’s pleasure, IT CAN’T! Can it?
He’s keeping secrets, having private conversations, going out alone, and spending unaccountable money, “NO, NO, NO! Not adultery, not here NOOOOOOOO!”
What’s this? Tucked between the seats…Western Union, “The fastest way to send money”

Does it count as adultery when there is no physical intimacy?
I know it is not physical because I had read the name that belongs to my mother-in-law.

Cup of tea in hand, Wo-man 2 Woman, we talk
Impasse, Wo-man 2 Woman, lovin’ the same man
We both crave him, Wo-man 2 Woman, and fittingly so; He is, Man, not shunning responsibility
You and I, Wo-man 2 Woman, are aware that there can only be 1
OH! IT HURTS, Wo-man 2 Woman, THERE CAN NOT BE-WILL NOT BE A COMPETITION
Woman, at your breast, a boy found comfort; now a MAN, he is afforded the comfort of Wo-man’s breast
God has a role for me as your son’s wife and a role for you as my husband’s mother, Wo-man 2 Woman, one shouldn’t despise the other
“…she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of man…” Genesis 2:22-25 NIV
Thank you Father God for allowing me this avenue of release, preventing me from speaking unlovingly to my mother-in-law. For in doing so I would not be representing you as I should, unworthy to be called an ambassador, 1 Corinthians 5:20. In the name of Christ, because of His blood, Amen.

...of ambiguity
Temporary. Not permanent. Beginning, end. Seasonal.
When I am told that something is temporary, the above thoughts come to mind. I have confidence in knowing that there is a starting point, as well an ending point. A specified day, week, month or year even, is noted when using the word temporary. That’s lucid right? Temporary is not ambiguous.
I’ve recently learned that temporary can in fact, be ambiguous.
My mother-in-law & brother-in-law are living with us, temporarily. I am ignorant of temporaries’ logistics in this situation. There is no specified time. It’s just, temporary.
“This is not permanent,” says my husband. His mother agrees. His wife, well, I’m still confused. Temporary has a designated beginning and end. What is temporaries’ allotment? I need a comparison to help me understand I think.
Department stores offer temporary positions during the holidays. The positions filled during this time are often referred to as, seasonal. This indicates that when the season ends, so does your job! Oh, okay, that’s right, we are currently in the middle of the holidays! Okay, so I just have to wait until the end of the season!
No, wait, uuuummmm, my husband didn’t say our current living arrangement is seasonal; he called it, temporary!
